Tin Whistle Class
I'm offering a tin whistle class. This class is designed to help you gain some skills on the tin whistle.
I'm offering this class at three levels:
1. Beginners: covering the basics of tone production, notes, fingerings, articulation, and tunes.
2. Intermediate: covering a larger repertoire of tunes and Irish ornamentation.
3. Advanced: covering more advanced Irish ornamentation, repertoire, and variation.
Here is a little information about the tin whistle.
The tin whistle is also known as the pennywhistle, and the Irish whistle. The tin whistle has been adopted by a bunch of folk music traditions, but perhaps the Irish have adopted the whistle to a greater extent than others. The genres that I play on the whistle primarily include music from England, Wales, Scotland, and of course Ireland.
The tin whistle can range from a $10 instrument, to a $500 instrument. You easily find one at your local music store for $10, and would be more than suitable for these classes. There are professionals that play on the $10 instruments, so that tells you how accessible these instruments are.
If you think to movies that feature soundtracks with the pennywhistle, titles like Braveheart, Lord of the Rings, and Titanic might come to mind. These soundtracks feature the whistle being played in the Irish style really, and is the style that I focus on when teaching the whistle. Below I have included two sound clips of myself playing the whistle. One is an air, and the other is a set of two Irish dance tunes called Reels.
